Cedar Valley Montessori School, Inc. was founded in 1971 by a group of parents concerned about the quality of preschool education available to their children locally.
CVMS follows the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori, physician and educator.

The school has been located at the Immaculate Conception Church, Eisenhower School, and Washington School in Marion before moving to the current location in downtown Cedar Rapids.
CVMS upholds the standards set by the American Montessori Society, and the Iowa Department of Education recognizes the elementary classroom as a Competent Private Instructor. Every classroom program has both a Directress - trained and certified by a recognized Montessori training center - and an experienced assistant.
The school is a licensed preschool and daycare center. CVMS and/or one or more of the staff are associated with the following: American Montessori Association, North American Montessori Teachers Association, National Center for Montessori Education, Montessori Institute of America, North American Association of Saint Nicholas Trained Teachers, Montessori Educators International and the Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children.
CVMS is a non-profit corporation with a Board of Directors composed of CVMS parents and other friends of the school. CVMS is both a state licensed school and daycare facility. With regard to admissions and hiring, CVMS does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, color, creed, national origin or family composition. Scholarships are available to those who qualify.
