The Montessori Classroom

The Montessori Method has been embraced throughout the world and many of its basic tenets may be found in use at both public and private schools. At Cedar Valley Montessori School, the classroom is peacefully structured, not chaotically permissive. A child is happiest in an atmosphere that promotes respect for self, others and her physical surroundings. With this in mind, children are free to move around the CVMS classroom to work, observe and interact socially.
Program Offerings

  •

Mission & Philosophy

Cedar Valley Montessori School was founded on the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori, physician and educator. She advocated the theory that children develop according to natural law and that they have special periods of sensitivity to aid them in the development of life. She urged that these sensitive periods be utilized to their fullest by giving the children the opportunity to develop their capabilities within a prepared environment. She warned that no amount of good teaching would help the child if given at the wrong time. Every period of development prepares them for the next and if children are properly prepared in one period, they are more able to fully develop their capabilities in later periods.

Goals of Montessori Teaching
  • To respond to a child's intellectual interests so that he may develop to his full capacity within a scientifically prepared learning environment

  •
  • To maintain respect for the individual child's learning ability, and thus enable him from his earliest years to deal with the challenges of life and to develop a love of learning

  •
  • To recognize that the most productive learning period in life is between birth and six years old and thus utilize the enormous flexibility of these learning years

  •
  • To instill the value of self-education and to direct the child's creative energy into meaningful paths of learning

  •
  • To encourage self-discipline, self-knowledge and independence, as well as enthusiasm for learning, an organized approach to problem-solving and academic skills

  •
  • To awaken the child's spirit and imagination

  •
  • To encourage the child's normal desire for independence and his sense of self-esteem

  •
  • To help the child to develop the kindness, courtesy and self-discipline that will allow him to become a full member of society

  •
  • To help the child learn how to observe, question and explore ideas independently
